The Great Sphinx holds the claim to fame as one of the most notorious monuments of Egypt and one that practically every tourist wanting to experience Giza has to see in all its mythical glory. Sometimes, wondering among tourists would be, “Am I allowed to go inside the Sphinx and see inside that giant limestone statue?”

So, the short answer is “NO.” As a matter of protection for its stabilization and preservation of the archaeological integrity, the Egyptian authorities have prohibited anyone from going inside the Sphinx.

Why Can’t Visitors Enter the Sphinx?

Firstly, the Sphinx is said to be over 4,500 years old, having been built during the times of Pharaoh Khafre. Longevity, erosion, different weather conditions including those induced by human activities have added to its decline. The Egyptian government has forbidden public access inside the monument just for its own safety and to avoid further damage. A few scientific and restoration experts have undergone investigations inside its inner chambers.

Is There Anything Inside the Sphinx?

Within the Great Sphinx, lying hidden, are tunnels and cavities- these features have sired innumerable myths and theories about hidden chambers and treasures beneath. Most research posits these spaces to be natural fissures or tiny man-made passageways with no grand secret chambers.

What Can You Do Instead?

Even if going inside or between the paws is not allowed, getting a bit close and personal with the Sphinx is a great experience in itself. You can:

  • Grab exquisite pictures with the Sphinx and Pyramids using the view platform.
  • Walk into the Sphinx Temple, located right in front of the statue.
  • Have an Egyptian guide walk you through history, uncovering untold facts and strange stories.

The Pyramids of Giza, the Grand Egyptian Museum, and a Nile dinner cruise are usually part of the full-day immersive Cairo experience, together with the Sphinx tour.
