The Edfu Temple, known too as the Temple of Horus, in Edfu, Egypt, is among the most beautiful and most protected. It lies on the west bank of the Nile, and to this very day, it stands unbroken. For everyone who would like to open up and have this historical moment sink in, it is a definite visit.

History:

The temple was taken into construction between 237 and 57 BCE in the Ptolemaic era and is dedicated to Horus, the falcon-headed god of protection, rule, and the sky. It is one of the major proofs of the architectural craft and devotion to religion in ancient Egypt.

The temple had a similar role in the organization of the annual Festival of the Sacred Marriage, which commemorated the marriage of Horus and Hathor, goddess of love and music.

One of the Greatest Architectural Works

The Edfu Temple captivates, marveling at aspects of its very excellent preservation that will let its visitors have an unforgettable experience, a rarity of what probably an Egyptian temple originally looked like in thousands of years ago. Major architectural features are the following:

The Great Pylon: This is an entry gateway of a considerable height; it is adorned with elaborate and finely carved images of Horus and Pharaohs.

The Courtyard: This is a large open space that surrounds the building and has a lot of roof-supporting columns. In other words, these parts of the building would have been used for ceremonies, entertainment, and meetings.

The Hypostyle Hall: This large hall also has very large columns, and each has been elaborately decorated with hieroglyphs and other carvings to illustrate the various religious rituals the texts describe.

The Shrine: At the very center of a temple, it is an inner place where the holy statue of Horus was probably standing.

Extravagant Sculptures and Hieroglyphs

Carvings-from a delicate to an all-conquering craftsmanship, the hieroglyphs cover the walls of the temple that bring to life stories of primeval myths, religious rituals, and the creation and construction of the temple. These writings provide a mind-blowing sense of insight into the beliefs and interpersonal relationships of the ancient Egyptians.

The Horus Statue: One of the highest symbols in the temple was the massive black granite statue of Horus standing, looking proudly right before the gateway. This particular beast has been understood as in the heavens by the eye of Horus. Travelers are prone to take their personal photographs in front thereof.
