The Egyptian Museum establishment’s importance came with the great global interest in ancient Egyptian antiquities after deciphering the Rosetta stone by the French scientist Champollion in 1822 AD. So, Muhammad Ali Pasha, in 1835 AD, ordered to transfer the artifacts to a small house at the old Azbakeya in central Cairo. It was called the Azbakeya Museum and was supervised by the scholar Refa’a al-Tahtawi.
Then it was transferred with its artifacts to the second exhibition hall in the Citadel of Salah El-Din. Until the French Egyptologist, Auguste Mariette thought of opening a museum on the Nile shore at Bulaq. Auguste was working at the Louvre Museum.
But these antiquities were exposed to the danger of flooding. So, they were transferred to a special annex of the Khedive Palace.
Then, the Egyptologist Gaston Maspero came during the reign of Khedive Abbas Helmy II. He decided to establish a new museum. The architect for the building was chosen through an international competition in 1895. This competition was the first of its kind. The French architect Marcel d’Orgnon won it.
Khedive Abbas Helmy II opened the museum in 1902 to become a historic landmark in central Cairo.
