Among Jordan‘s Umayyad desert fortresses, Qasr at-Tuba is the furthest south. Rumour has it that the Qasr al-Tuba, begun between 743 and 744 AD by Caliph Walid II ibn Yazid for his sons al-Hakam and Uthman, was never finished despite its apparent destiny as a caravanserai along a well-traveled caravan route. The original plan called for two courtyard dwellings, each about 70 square meters in area, with semicircular ornamental towers projecting from them. After Caliph al Walid’s death, the building seems left deserted. In the middle of the seventh century AD, Caliph Walid II ibn Yazid oversaw the construction of Qasr al-Tuba and Qasr al-Mushatta. Their distinctive architecture—mud brick instead of limestone, with marble accents and far more creative structural designs—and the fact that they were the most recent two incomplete Umayyad castles—all combine to classify them.

Since Qasr al-Tuba was more fully constructed when abandoned, it was likely built sooner than Mushatta. It is located at the base of Wadi al Ghadaf, a pathway that leads from Wadi Sirhan to the plateau. Three bottomless wells, big lakes for watering cattle, and an unusually complicated water-raising system characterize Qasr al-Tuba. It appears that the Umayyad network expanded southward from ‘Azraq. Gradually watching the outflows from Wadi Sirhan, it is probable that Tuba’s position in Wadi al-Ghadaf is towards the end of that network’s development.
