As Alexander the Great Birthday is known to everyone, very few people are aware of the fact Olympias ( Alexander’s mother) was Philip’s primary wife for a while. Furthermore, the day Alexander was born, it is believed that Philip was organizing a siege on the city of Potidea on the Chalcidice peninsula.

On the very same day, Philip received the news of his general Parmenion defeating the united Illyrian and Paeonian troops at the Olympic Games, and that his horses had won. The Temple of Artemis in Ephesus which is one of the Seven Wonders of the World was also reported to have burned down on the same day.

As a result, Hegesias of Magnesia claimed that it had burned down because Artemis was away, attending the birth of this noble figure. Everyone believed that such traditions had arisen during Alexander’s reign only at his request. It was all done to demonstrate that he was superhuman and destined for grandeur from birth.
