Eid Al Adha
Eid al Adha is a national holiday. The general public has the day off, and schools and most businesses are closed.
Muslims sacrifice an animal on Eid al Adha to show their devotion to Allah. The holiday is based on a story from the Quran that Christians and Jews are also familiar with.
Eid al-Adha, or the “Feast of Sacrifice,” commemorates the Prophet Ibrahim, also known as Abraham in Christianity and Judaism willingness’s to sacrifice his son, Ismail, as Allah commanded. It is one of the most important holidays in Islam.
History of Eid Al Adha
The holiday, which typically lasts three to four days and is celebrated by millions of Muslims worldwide, begins on the 10th day of the Muslim calendar lunar month of Dhul-Hijja, during the time of Hajj, the annual pilgrimage to Mecca.
It is one of two major Muslim holidays celebrated around the world each year, the other being Eid al-Fitr, or “Festival of Breaking the Fast,” which commemorates the end of Ramadan.
Eid Al Fitr Seasonal Holiday in Egypt
Eid al-Fitr is on of the Islamic festival that commemorates the end of Ramadan, the holy month of fasting during which Muslims fast from dawn to dusk every day. It is the first time Muslims can eat during the day after fasting for the entire month of Ramadan. The Arabic phrase “Eid al-Fitr” literally translates to “festival of breaking the fast.”
Eid al-Fitr is observed during the first three days of the lunar month of Shawwal which is the tenth month of the Muslims Lunar calendar. This means that the timing of Eid al-Fitr (and Ramadan) varies from year to year because it is determined by the lunar cycle. It does not begin until the new moon is visible, so it begins at different times for different Muslims around the world. Some Muslims, however, prefer to celebrate Eid al-Fitr when the new moon first appears over Mecca rather than in their own locations.
